A young man was killed this morning on College Way near Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth when he was hit by a vehicle which failed to stop.
The man, 27 years of age, was unable to be saved by the emergency services who attended the scene and he died of his injuries. His next of kin have been informed.
Police say it was a hit and run. Parts of a vehicle were found near the man’s body.
Officers from the Roads Policing Team are conducting a forensic examination of road. It is closed from the junction of College Way with Townstal Road to the bottom of the hill where it meets Coombe Road.
A police spokesman said: “At 12.40am on Wednesday, September 27, a male was found lying on the A379 College Way at Dartmouth within 200 metres of the Britannia Royal Naval College entrance.
“Despite efforts of the emergency services, the male sadly died as a result of his injuries.
“Damaged vehicle parts were located near the male’s body. At the time of the incident, it was dark, the road surface was dry and the weather was fine and dry.
“Police are appealing to the driver of the vehicle involved or any witnesses to the incident to contact Police."
