A massive bomb from the Second World War has been discovered by builders digging a ditch in the South Hams.
The Royal Navy bomb squad were called out to deal with the “substantial” device.
A witness said it was removed from the field and taken to Strete Gate beach at about 6.40pm to be destroyed.
The beach was cordoned off as a result and the bomb was detonated at about 7pm.
Resident Michael Goodlass, 35, was sat in his bedroom with nine-month-old son Ted when it happened.
He said: “We heard the explosion from the house and then a small shudder.
“It was quite a hefty bang. It rattled the windows and made us jump.”
Devon and Cornwall Police said: "The police would like to thank the public for their patience while this incident was dealt with.
"Any explosion heard in the area on Wednesday evening was nothing to be concerned about."
