Vandals have smashed windows in a local landmark, as a spate of criminal damage continues.

On Friday night, January 12, six large windows at the top of the control tower next to Dartmouth’s indoor pool in Townstal were smashed by vandals.

A spokesman for the police said: “The cost of repairing the windows is around £1,500. It is a continuation of the criminal damage occurring at the top of town.

“We need witnesses and ask that they dial 101 and contact PC Richardson.”

The control tower and quite a substantial hangar were built in the early 1960s in order to familiarise cadets at the Britannia Royal Navy College with helicopter operations. Only the control tower remains.

It was once considered to be developed as a memorial for the crew of a Royal Navy helicopter who died during a training accident when the helicopter crashed near the site in 1973 killing four. Although the development did not happen, the tower has remained as a familiar landmark for residents and visitors coming into Dartmouth.

Police believe that CCTV at this location and nearby, would to help fight the continuing trend of criminal damage around the top of town.
