Commuters were stuck in hour-long queues after a crash blocked one lane of the A38.
Highways England said a catering trailer overturned on the eastbound carriageway near South Brent spilling cooking oil in the road.
It happened at about 8am on Friday, August 16, between the Woodpecker and Marley Head junctions.
Sgt Olly Tayler, of Devon and Cornwall Police, warned drivers to approach with care as Highways England cleared the road.
The road was finally reopened at about 10.52am.
