MRS Jan Turner, of Sherford, near Kingsbridge, writes: The decision to approve the erection of a 112ft wind turbine at Winslade Farm, Frogmore is in clear breach of the National Policy Framework guidelines and contrary to the advice given to councillors by professional council officers for the application to be rejected. Despite this overwhelming evidence for refusal, councillors voted to give it the go-ahead. So why was this perverse decision taken? I attended the parish council meeting in Frogmore when the application was discussed. Cllr Julian Brazil said, in the open meeting, that if South Hams officers had no objections to the application, he would not recommend that it went before the full development management committee. I queried this later, as there were a large number of objectors and Cllr Brazil said there would be little point, as many of the councillors were either farmers or had farming connections! The majority of councillors decided that the wish of one business to save £25,000 in electricity costs, partly as a result of installing a 'robotic milking machine', outweighed the overwhelming evidence for refusal. The only person to gain is the applicant and it sets a clear precedent for further applications. The South Hams landscape will remain under threat while the clear bias in favour of large wind turbines is displayed by the predominantly agricultural influence on the development committee. Councillors should be looking at the bigger picture. The most important industry in the South Hams is tourism, which provides employment for a large number of people and brings in massive amounts of money. The sight of large wind turbines and solar arrays in the AONB can only harm tourism and without it the area will decline. We should not be taking risks with the environment for the advantage of a single business.
