STOKE Fleming Football Club is in danger of folding as it cannot field a team with its limited number of players.

The final whistle could soon sound on the club unless it starts to receive more active support from keen sportsmen.

The club finished fourth last season after eight years of back-to-back promotions in the South Devon League and is desperate to continue its enviable success.

Committee member Ciaran McClennon said: 'Some of the older players have hung up their boots after years of commitment and others have transferred to other teams, so Stoke Fleming is looking for more players to take part in training and league matches.

'The team has secured a sponsor for next season along with its new changing rooms, but the efforts will go to waste if numbers do not increase.

'It would be such a shame to see the first team fold as we've got a fantastic spirit and have enjoyed some really good seasons.

'The team has been running for eight years and we've won our league three times and been runners-up five times.

'We used to have a reserves team too but had to dissolve that due to falling numbers.

'As we've lost several people we are hoping to encourage as many people as possible to join us now.

'All ages and abilities are welcome – basically anyone who wants to play football at a half decent standard.

'We are also looking for a manager as our acting manager, Darren Moysey, is only able to do it on a temporary basis.

'We train every week and it's a really good atmosphere so we're appealing for people to get in touch.'

The team trains every Wednesday at Stoke Fleming Village Hall from 6.30pm.
