Dartmouth Golf Club men’s section
It’s been pretty tough going lately at Dartmouth, playing a medal off the golds last week and this week a medal off the whites, but it’s nice to know we have the right calibre of golfers to cope with such challenges writes John Garner.
Andy Lennon’s net 72 off the golds last week was exceptional and this week it’s the turn of Steve Blackie.
I think it’s true to say he’s hung up his rugby boots for good and is hooked on the lovely game and why not when you win with a cracking round of net 69?
In second Mike Whitelaw, who spends more time at the club than he does at home these days and is doing a sterling job for the seniors, scored 72.
Although he’s now eligible for the bus pass, Dave Fahy’s swing hasn’t slowed down at all and he smashed his way into third with a good round af 73, ahead of Joe Turner in fourth with 74 and Brian Mushens in fifth with 75. There were two twos, both on the 18th Andy Birss and Lew Easter.
Only 15 players played in the Saturday circus, mainly because there was a league match away to Teign Valley. Ian Jenkins is a fairly new member to Dartmouth having joined from Churston and he could be one to watch.
His current handicap is 24 but I’ve got a feeling that won’t last, a drive and a sandwedge on the sixth gives you a clue as to his potential and once he becomes consistent it’s all in place for him to be very good.
He won the front nine with 21 points while club captain Kevin Eighteen won the back with 20. Enjoying his summer holiday and playing lots of golf, young Sam Knight won the circus with 37.
Dave Fahy got the plan right, he had the only two, £15 and no cut. Dartmouth lost away at Teign Valley 3-2, which means they’ve played four, lost three and have 191/2 points, with three games left it’s still on the cards and it could come down to the last game which will be at home.
In my report last week I mentioned how well Ed Mitchell played and forecast him to become a single-figure golfer.
He was cut a shot on the day but has since been cut a further two shots on exceptional play, taking him to a handicap of 10. Well done Ed, you’re one away.
