All four regatta tennis top seeds in the closed men’s singles sailed serenely into the semi-finals writes Tony Atkins.
Hugh Ryder (1) and Rufus Vincett (4) didn’t concede a game while Michael Carrington (3) and James Callard (2) dropped just three games apiece at Coronation Park.
After beating Jerry Harper 7-5, 6-3, Michael Wood fell to defending champion Hugh Ryder 6-0, 6-0 and Vincett completed his whitewash with a straight-sets defeat of Matthew Putt 6-0, 6-0
The semi-final between the Regatta veteran and the teenage Ryder, son of event sponsors Pete and Kate Ryder (Cafe Alf Resco), promises to be a cracker.
In the bottom half of the draw Michael Carrington beat Colin Wilson 6-2, 6-1 with James Callard posting an identical score in his win over Nicholas Smith.
Meanwhile, in the ladies’ closed singles, Rosie Clive-Smith has posted her intentions with victories over Marion Foster 6-3, 6-3 Sue Manley 6-1, 6-1.
In the semi-finals of the ladies’ doubles, 2014 runners-up Karen Davis and Kate Watson eased past Liz Harris and Caroline Jeffs 6-1, 6-2 and will play Yvonne Cottam and Jayne Turner in the final after their rivals beat Sally Clarke and Philippa Franks 6-3, 6-4.
Steve Cairns and Paul Tucker are just one win away from the title and will face either Philip Matthews and Michael Wood or second seeds James Callard and Hugh Ryder in the final. Matthews and Wood were given a tough test in their semi-final defeat of father and son Trevor and Rufus Vincett 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
In the semi-finals of the men’s 45 doubles, Regatta favourites Phil Clift and Alistair Forbes beat Michael Carrington and Anthony Lyons 6-4, 7-5. Steve Jones and David Parker won through to the semi-final after a titanic clash with Matthew Putt and Colin Wilson 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.
In the junior events, Miles Hurt and Tom Carlton are looking good in the 15s, as are William Berry, Jack Darburn and Oscar Thomas in the 13s.
In the men’s open singles Devon’s Great Britain deaf olympian Peter Willcox is seeded to meet Lewie Parker (north Devon) in the final, while the ladies’ title could go to either Isabella Brown or Vicftoria Bullock.
In the first round of this week’s Devon junior county closed 18 and under singles at Ivybridge, Hugh Ryder was a given a tough draw and was beaten by third seed Buzzy Avis (Torquay) 6-3, 6-3.
Former Port of Dartmouth Open champion and Great Britain international Kate Brown (Devon) won her first British grass court over 35 singles title at Wimbledon after beating Claire Raddon 6-0, 6-2 in the final.
While in the over 50 doubles, former Regatta champion Jackie Nesbitt (Plymouth) was a winner alongside Rachel Apsey.
