Dart Gig Club held its annual regatta on Saturday. The club were lucky again with the weather as a few early showers soon cleared away to leave a bright if cold day with a moderate westerly breeze.

As usual, Dartmouth Yacht Club allowed the Gig Club to use its premises as the base.

The racing started at 12.30pm with the ladies’ B race. The Dart crew had a very muddled start with a strong ebb tide under them, but rowed well from the back of the fleet to overtake two boats and come home sixth.

The ladies’ A had good row, with a successful turn on the first mark, where they overtook Bridport, to come home in fifth place.

The men’s races followed, with the men’s A also coming in fifth place. The men’s B, with several novice racers, had a solid row, battling with Lyme Regis through the last third of the race. They managed to stay ahead, coming in in fourth place.

The Dart ladies’ vets had the best placing of the day. They didn’t have the best of starts, but they fought hard down the first leg, to pull ahead of Bridport and Salcombe coming in second behind Caradon.

Dart were able to get a second ladies’ vets crew out with BRNC loaning them Ajax. The Dart men’s vets came in third place.

Dart men were also able to borrow Ajax, so a second men’s vets crew raced. Dart ladies’ C had an enjoyable row and came in eighth.

Dart men’s C crew, with crew of new and old rowers, rowed well to come in third. The last race of the day was the mixed race. Dart rowed well, but had a clash with Bridport on the first mark, never managing to catch them, which put Dart in fifth place.

The consistency of the Dart results meant that they came third in the overall points behind Caradon and Salcombe, a pleasing result for the club’s hard work.

As usual, the club wishes to thank commentator Hilary Bastone, Gail Woodgate, Angie Raeburn, John Bowden, Alan Pyne, the Ship in Dock Inn, Matt Pink, Dartmouth Bakery, the Anchorstone Cafe, the Crab and Bucket, the Royal Dart Yacht Club, DHNA, Justin Hammer, DARC, Yorkie Lomas, Tony Hodge and Noss and Brixham rowers for their assistance in making the event a success.
