The annual World Pilot Gig Championships held in the Isles of Scilly was celebrating its 25th year and for the first time Dart Gig Club shipped three gigs to the islands for the May bank holiday racing.  There were a few tricky moments on the Friday when many of the flights into the islands were delayed due to the weather but finally all club members made it to the beach. The racing began on the Friday night with the ladies vets and supervets (over 50s) race with the crews racing in from St Agnes to St Marys. Although it was a grey evening the weather conditions were excellent for rowing. Dart had a crew in both categories. The ladies' veterans, rowing in Volante in her first race, finished a very commendable ninth out of 58 crews and the supervets also finished well, sixth out of 14. This race was followed by men's vets race, in which Dart had a supervets crew which included two Brixham rowers, Dave and Kevin. The men came 11th out of the 23 supervets crews.  The main races followed on Saturday and Sunday. The weather on both days was bright with light winds – nearly perfect conditions. The first long race in from St Agnes always provides a spectacle. 141 boats lined up for the ladies race with Dart's three crews spread out across the very long start line. The ladies' A, in Volante, had an excellent race, coxed by Martin from Mevagissey, which put them in the B group. The ladies' B, rowing in Smudger, also has a good race which put then in group D. The ladies' C enjoyed their race and were placed in group J. The following three races are shorter sprint races, in from Nut Rock off Tresco. The racing in the individual heats seemed closer than ever this year, with all boats fighting for position so they didn't drop down a group. The ladies' A rowed well and were delighted that all their hard work and training, both and in and out of the boat, paid off to finish 22nd. The ladies' B had a real struggle to stay in group D on the Sunday morning, but with grit they managed to hang on to their place, finally coming in 48th overall. The ladies' C crew moved into group and maintained their position there. The Dart men's supervets were joined by novice club rower Rupert Kempley and Dave Moralley from Brixham. They were delighted with their efforts, coming in 105th out of 138. These are very commendable results for a small club.  Dart loaned Smudger to Cattewater for the men's races and Lighting to Helford's supervets, who brought her home in group D. Overall, it was a marvellous club weekend which besides the rowers, involved Colin and Paul, the training coxes, the towers and Kevin Pyne and Stan Bray for boat and trailer work.  Ladies' A: Alison Bland, Kate Cooke, Ella Chivers, Chloe Gardner, Bonnie Chivers and Katharine Money coxed by Martin Walton from Mevagissey Ladies' B: Peta Chivers, Clare Thorp, Carol Squire, Karen Harvey, Keira Burnell and Lucy Swash coxed by Paul Kunert Ladies' C: Maggie Russell, Katie Woodford, Liz Moseley, Wendy Jones, Hilary Bussell and Shirley Waycott coxed by Jonny Holmes from Salcombe  Men's crew: Paul Kunert, Stan Bray, Michael Bryant-Mole, Tony Doige, Rupert Kempley and Dave Moralley coxed by Clare Thorp.
