Last Wednesday the ever popular midweek circus was held away at Dainton writes John Garner.

Forty players gathered to make the most of a lovely clam day with bright sunshine.

Although Dainton is now familiar to most players, it is still a challenge to play well on a different course, so it was no surprise that more than half of the players failed to play to their handicap.

John Thomson started well and had 16 points after six holes, unfortunately he still had 16 points after 11 holes.

Bob Cottam decided to lay up with his three wood on the 10th as he wasn't prepared to take the stream on.

Of course, he flushed it and ended up in the reeds anyway, those best laid plans...

The greens were in fantastic condition but were sown with a different grass which held subtle breaks in them, making a lot of players three-putt for a pastime.

At the end of the day, though, everyone enjoyed their day and many tales were told at the bar. Nearest the pin winners were Sid Davis, Simon Knight, Ray Coles, Dave Scanlon and John Thomson.

The longest drive was won by Mark Beale and there were three twos: Rob Glazier on the fourth, George Reeve on the 15th, and Dave Fahy on the 17th.

The front nine was shared between Paul Durrant, Ray Coles, and Paul Humphries.

The back nine was shared by Mike Shalders, Sid Davis, and John Thomson.

The winner overall was Mike 'he knows how to win big' Shalders with 37 points, second Rod Hawke with 36 points and third on count back Mark Beale 36.

Club captain Kevin Eighteen sent his apologies and the players wish him a speedy recovery. Many thanks go to Rob Knight again for his tireless efforts in organising everything and a special thank you goes to Arthur Carr and Tony Chappell for their help with the cards.

Mr Garner's missus sent him to Wentworth for the weekend so he missed the action on Saturday of Joe Nicholls and Jack Kirby winning the Yamaha Open, well done to them for conquering such a big field.
