The son of regatta tennis sponsors Peter and Kate Ryder (Cafe Alf Resco), Hugh was seeded nine in the 16 and under singles at Torbay, but was to reach the quarter-finals after beating higher-rated rival Andy Osborne, the number eight seed, 6-4, 6-3.
Wins over Addison Petrie 6-2, 6-1, and Zak Pacey 4-6, 7-5, 10-8, set him on his way to the last eight ,but after that straight-sets defeat of Osborne, Ryder was to lose out to Aeron Evans (Wales) 6-3, 6-1. The Welshman went on to reach the final but was beaten by second seed Tadhg Maclean 3-6, 6-1, 11-9.
In the 18 and under singles, Ryder won through a round but then bowed out at the hands of 10th seed Taylor Penny 6-4, 6-3.
In the 18 doubles Ryder and Finlay Cook beat Zak Pacey and Tom Finchley 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), but then went down to eventual runners-up and number four seeds Zaccariah Sheppard (Totnes) and Buzzy Avis (Torquay) 6-1, 6-1.
Ivybridge’s Gabriella Hattersley had a tough draw in the women’s 21 and under singles.
After beating Kitty Lynch-Brown 6-1, 6-1 she was beaten by to seed India Rojano (Cornwall) 6-3, 6-4.
In the Open singles, Hattersley defeated Elizabeth Edwards 6-0, 6-1 and took a first-set lead over third seed Marsha Hobbs before missing out 1-6, 6-2, 12-10.
