Dartmouth closed Chronicle Cup champion Hugh Ryder and local rival Henry Warrender were both in action at the Devon Junior County Tennis Championships at Ivybridge, with both youngsters reaching the last 16 of the 14 and under singles writes Tony Atkins.

Always a hugely competitive end-of-summer event at the South Devon Tennis Centre, Warrender beat Jake Freeman 4-1, 4-1 only to subsequently lose a tight match with Harry Lakeman 5-4, 4-1.

Hugh Ryder's passage into the second round saw came at the expense of Exeter's Adam Cotgrave 4-0, 4-1 and the reigning Dartmouth junior champion was to put up a terrific fight against Matyas Metyko before bowing out 4-1, 4-5, 10-6.

Warrender and Ryder teamed up in the 14 and under doubles, but were beaten in the quarter-finals by second seeds Adam Cotgrave and Archie Dudman (Exeter) 6-4, 6-2.

Warrender went on to partner Chloe Sluce to the semi-finals of the mixed doubles, where they gave a great account of themselves in defeat at the hands of second seeds and eventual champions Tom Fenton and Polly Bushby, going down 6-4, 7-5.

In the boys' 18 and under singles Gus Hayward (Kingsbridge) was beaten in the last 16 by Ben Collins 4-0, 4-1.
