He’s back and what a bang he’s come back with writes John Garner.
‘Boss’ – Bob Wotton made an immediate impact with entry to the clubhouse last Wednesday, showing off his new basin haircut.
Some reckoned he looked like a bouncer from one of the Torquay nightclubs while others thought he looked better in a bobble hat.
Anyway, Haircut One Hundred, no not the group – Bob has his haircut every 100 days, that way he knows it will only cost £1 per week – cleaned up the prize fund.
A brilliant 23 points on the back nine carded him a total of 40 points to win convincingly and to complete his day he had the only two. Last week Tommo commented that Bob’s two on the 18th was half as many shots on the last as he had putts on the first...
David Thompson and John Garner shared the front nine with 20 points but spare a thought for Rob Berry, who scored 39 points and won nothing.
The long-awaited captain’s away day took place last Sunday and Monday. It has to be said straight away hats off to captain Kevin Eighteen for organising a superb outing a St Pierre, south Wales.
Two beautiful parkland courses were full of mature oak and chestnut trees, the meandering fairways led down to pretty lakes and ponds and everywhere you looked was a picture of beauty.
As the players set out on the first day it soon became very apparent just how many trees there were on the course and everyone had trouble avoiding them.
Around five hours later all the players were in and telling stories about their day at the bar and looking forward to dinner at 8pm.
Before everyone sat down Kevin Eighteen stood up and thanked Steve Owen and Graham White for their contribution to the dinner. Conspicuous by their absence, Kevin had put two bottles of wine on each table on their behalf.
After a very good meal the prize giving was held, nearest the pin on the third was Ron Cooper, on the sixth Aaron Oliphant, the 13th John Wood and the 18th, Mark Beal.
The longest drive went to Lumpy Lord.
In third overall was Dean Raspin with 34, on countback from Mario Aresti, who by his own admittance had a lot of luck; whenever he hit a tree the ball bounced back out on to the fairway.
Adrian Rendle won with a very good away card of 38 points. He was very generous and donated his prize to charity, to which Phil Brooking should be thanked for donating £120.
Monday saw sagging shoulders and blood shot eyes a plenty, fortunately the second course was a lot shorter but the first hole became a lot longer for the assistant professional Scott Edwards as he put his tee shot straight into the bush left.
After a long day a lot of tired bodies sat down and waited for the perennial Rob Knight, assisted by Tony Chappell, to work out the prize fund.
First there were three twos, by Jamie Waugh, Scott Edwards and John Garner. It should have been Rob Glazier as well, but no two was circled!
The front nine was shared between Paul Durrant and Rob Glazier on 18 points, with Steve Tozer and Tommo on 20 points. The back nine was shared between Ian Jenkins and John Garner on 17 points, Martin Howlett on 18 points and Dave Parnell on 19 points.
Overall Paul Dunkerly was fourth with 32 points, third was John Garner with 33, second Rob Glazier with 34 and the winner was John Thompson with 36.
For the second time in three weeks John Thompson returns to the winner’s enclosure, spraying golf balls is a thing of the past for him. Well done, it could even be said he could be consistent.
Well played again John, 36 points with all that beer on board on an away course is admirable.
