MONDAY, July 7 brought about another Stableford qualifier for the Dartmouth Golf Club seniors.
Standard handicap protocols were in place with play from the blue tees- 32 players took to the course.
Despite the sun, it was a windy morning which affected ball flight significantly, particularly on the exposed back nine.
‘Radar’ Roy Baldwin took charge with his antenna right on target. He may have had two no scores but was still able to put together an exceptional round of 39 points in swirling conditions, including seven pars and two inward nine birdies. Very well done sir!
Second place went to last week’s winner Ralph Clark with Colin Cooperman third both scoring 37pts. Robert Wotton, Gordon Holmes and Tony King were all in close pursuit on 36pts.
Only Brian Mushens scored at every hole which secured him eighth spot but gave an indication of today’s difficulties alongside some awkward pin positions.
Birdie twos were scored at the par threes by Paul Stubbs at the fifth and Roy Baldwin on hole 18. Competition guru Nigel Osborne was in charge of the cards. Many thanks to him.
After 15 qualifying events, it is George Reeve who leads the senior of the year race with 47 points. Andrew Dix (43) and Roy Baldwin (40) are his stiffest competition to date.
Elsewhere, Dartmouth Seniors suffered their biggest match defeat for many years at the hands of St Mellion.
Richard Bevan & John Gratton were the only pair to get on the board as Dartmouth fell to a 7.5-0.5 defeat, St Mellion winning 13-3 overall and retaining the Tamar Cup as a result. Steve Atkins won the nearest to the pin for Dartmouth.
A Perring Cup quarter final clash saw Roy succeed again, overcoming Nigel Osborne and Tim Cronin alongside partner Brian Mushens.
Next week sees another Stableford qualifier.
