Wednesday’s midweek medal was a true test of golf writes John Garner.

Of the 26 players that entered, only one played to his handicap. new member Luke Prideaux, who plays off five.

Not much is known about him, but he’ll soon make headlines if he keeps playing like he did on Wednesday.

To go round the championship course in gross 77 in those conditions was truly outstanding, obviously he’s a talented player and can be volatile at times, as he’s been seen to stomp off the course, but a win like that should calm him down.

Rob Waye played well and was leader in the clubhouse for a long time; he thought he’d done enough with a net 75 until Luke walked in to put him in second.

Third was XLL Andy Birss 77, fourth Joe Turner 78 and fifth Steve Atkins 82, an admirable effort from Steve, who must be growing in confidence now that his new foot is suiting him well.

The Chamberlain foursomes was played on Saturday, the most difficult format of golf was compounded by a strong north-westerly wind which made the course very intimidating.

Ten pairs competed and Mario Aresti and Mike Whitelaw won with a net 78.5.

In second came Brian Mushens and David Thompson 81.0, third Gary Bonser and Kevin Matthews 81.5.

As if Saturday’s wind wasn’t bad enough, it grew to gale force on Sunday for the first league match of the season.

The players from Bovey Tracey were understandably overwhelmed by it all and Dartmouth won comfortably 4-1, a good start to this year’s league campaign.
