As the good weather continues, more and more players are making the most of it before winter sets in writes John Garner.

Thirty players gathered for the Wednesday circus, with the first tee time at 11.05am.

Around 3.30pm the first out started to return to the clubhouse, swiftly followed by a succession of the four balls.

As more and more came in, the question was ‘Are there any twos yet?’ to which the answer was no, and then right at the end in came Desmond two twos Lew!

Lew had two twos and was wondering if he could get paid twice – no such luck, but a very nice handshake all the same!

Barry O’Shea’s fortunes were a little different this week as he could only manage one point in four holes.

Meanwhile Mike Shalders was tearing his hair out as he lipped out three times for a two!

The front nine was won by Mike Griffiths with 21 as he returns to form and is one of the favourites to win the Circus Championship at the weekend.

At peace with the world, himself and his game, Mark ‘Chino’ Collins swung with ease and grace to win the back nine with 21 points playing off seven.

He should take note of that, growl, bark snap, snap, it’s ‘avin it’ never works in this game!

And then we come to our club professional Rob Glazier. Rob rarely has a chance to play with us and when he has he’s not played well until now.

Congratulations on winning the Wednesday circus for the first time with 39 points off scratch, well played.

On Saturday the rescheduled Circus Championship was finally played and there was much speculation as to who the favourites were.

The in-form Mike Griffiths was one, Ian Jenkins another, Ray Coles perhaps and never discount Steve Owen!

Nobody tipped either of the eventual winners.

For a long time Rob Knight’s game had gone to pieces, he could hardly grip the club due to his arthritis but with some magic pills and a few lessons he’s turned the corner to win the front nine with 22 and share the overall win for the Saturday circus with David Thompson on 40.

The much-fancied Mike Griffiths duly delivered and won the back nine with 21.

As for the championship itself, there was no one more surprised than David Thompson, who won with 40 points on countback from Rob Knight.

Third was Mike Griffiths on countback from Ian Jenkins. Nearest the pin on the third and 18th was John Wood, fifth David Thompson, seventh Ian Jenkins. The longest drive went to Roger Mawson.

There were two two, from Sid Davis and Lorna Elliott.

A lot of hard work goes into these competitions and for that many thanks go to club captain Kevin Eighteen and Ian Metchette.
