Thirty seven players gathered for the midweek medal and they all looked forward to making the most of the summer weather .

The course is getting hard now and there is lots of run on the ball as the ground gets harder. It can be quite difficult to get the tee into the ground, and if it doesn’t rain soon some players will be punching or putting their way up the fourth fairway.

One player in particular punched above his weight, and that was ex-night club bouncer Rob Waye. He returned his card with a net 66, taking the field apart and winning by a mile. Paul Brown was not expecting much of himself as he has been away fishing for weeks, but you never know in this game and he surprised himself to come second on 72, just beating third-placed Mike Griffiths on countback.

The broad shoulders of the mighty Birss man came to his rescue on the eighth. Andy decided to play safe off the tee with an eight iron, but he put it in the rough on the right. His next shot was nothing short of miraculous: he gouged it out to put it 164 yards short from where to put it on the green with a pitching wedge and two putted for a par.

Chino Collins had the same mindset, a rescue off the tee, then an eight iron followed by a sand wedge, but he three putted from 15 feet – the best laid plans…

For their good play, Rob Waye gets cut from 20 to 18, Paul Brown from 13 to 12 and Mike Griffiths from 15 to 14. Brian Mushens decided to play a better ball for the mixed circus – and very popular it was, too.

It was nice to see Jenny Wilshire back on the fairways playing well and in the winning team – herself, John Wood and Phil Brooking won with 89, second was Bob Wotton, Steve Owen and Pete Hannaford with 83, while third were John Garner, Ian Jenkins and Arthur Carr, with the latter being in the dog house with his Mrs. She left him two prepared microwave meals and asked him to cook them before her return, but he put the plum sauce on the fish and the tartar sauce on the duck.

There was only one two, and yep, you guessed it, him who can’t play golf – Steve Owen again.
