DARTMOUTH GC’s ladies were scrambling to change shoes and find wet weather after nine holes of their latest medal.
Katie Panton made a solid start, with four pars on the front nine helping to balance two higher score holes and seemed well placed with a further par on 11 until the wheels began to wobble on the 12th and had completely fallen off by the 15th.
Meanwhile, Jules Vincent, who had seemed to be struggling on the front nine, was quietly putting together a good score, finishing with a par on the 18th.
Both finished on level par nett 74, with Jules winning on countback; Jan Cousins completed the top finishers with 78.
The Dartmouth course ladies were also playing a medal and there were commendable scores in tough conditions.
Sharon Jones finished with nett 63, three under par, and her playing partner Barbara Dally was second with a level par 66. The tricky fourth and seventh gave both players some difficulties which were admirably compensated for on other holes - well played ladies.
It can be difficult to overcome the impact of two blobs on the first nine of a Stableford but Barrie O’Shea found the perfect solution in the men’s midweek competition - birdie the second most difficult on the course and bag yourself five points along with a couple of three pointers!
A similar tactic was employed on the back nine but with just three pointers to make up for the blobs.
Brian Mushens had no blobs but his equal score of 38 points was beaten by Barrie on countback. Countback was also needed to separate the three players on 35 - Rob Isaacs-Berry, Roy Baldwin and Rob Knight.
A great time was had on joint captains’ day at the weekend - a full report on this next week.
