Dartmouth was one of eight Devon clubs, two Cornish clubs, two Dorset clubs and one Somerset club who joined Teignmouth on Saturday, June 7, to take part in their annual gig regatta. The organisers had been concerned that conditions might be too choppy for racing to take place, but they improved enough for the proceedings to go ahead. The chop, which is quite particular to Teignmouth, made for some interesting rowing and some tricky crew changes on the beach, with the waves trying to break in over the port quarter of the gig. Particular thanks is due to Ali Bland for braving the water to hold the gig square to the beach on several occasions. The ladies' B race was the first race of the day. The crew had a great start with Bonnie Chivers stroking. Teign pulled away into an early lead and Cattewater gained the water over Dart, leaving Smudger in an excellent third place. The ladies' A crew, coxed by Colin Brown, rowed next and had an excellent race, coming home in second place after the home club in Morgan. The men's B followed this – Dart only had six men at this event. The men had an awesome start, putting them up in the lead with Rame off the start line. By the first mark Dart were still in second place. On the second mark, Torridge came in on Dart, catching the stroke oar – despite Dart having the water. By the third mark, Torridge had overtaken Dart, and on the final leg three other crews overtook them. This put Dart in seventh place out of 14 – with four of the crew supervets plus novices Rupert Kempley and Will Atkins, this was a good result. The crew were due to row the C race as well, but one of the Salcombe rowers was taken seriously ill and the Dart crew returned to the beach to await developments. After a long delay, the racing resumed with the Salcombe rower having been dispatched safely to Torbay. The ladies' vets was the next race for Dart and the ladies also had another great start, staying up with the lead boat Kerens well on to the first mark. The crew maintained their second place to the finish. The men's vets was the next race, with Wally Walton from Teign taking the place of Will Atkins. The crew had a good start and maintained their third position to the finish. A pleasing set of results for the club.
