Kingswear offshore sailor Henry Bomby made land at Roscoff bright and early on Wednesday morning, finishing the second leg of the 45the edition of La Solitaire du Figaro at 5.04am. However, the youngster was in no mood to smile, having finished a disappointing 35th out of 37 competitors in the famous single-handed race. He was brutally honest about his performance, saying: 'I had a terrible start and couldn't keep my eyes open on the first night, I was really tired and then just lost places. 'Lizard Point was the first tidal gate and I just lost time in general from being behind in the tide, right from then there was no way back into it. 'We compressed at Fastnet but everyone just started sailing away, I was in lighter wind, I could have tacked but the guys who did it, I don't think it paid off. Everything seem to go wrong, nothing went my way.' Henry now has until Sunday to get over his disappointment and prepare himself mentally for leg three of the four-leg race. This leg will see competitors race from Roscoff south to Les Sables d'Olonne in Vendée on the west coast of France, a distance of 505 nautical miles, only slightly shorter than the last leg from Plymouth to Roscoff. Henry, who is competing in his third Solitaire, had sailed well in the first leg from Deauville to Plymouth to finish 22nd, though he was disappointed not to finish higher after losing ground in the channel crossings. Speaking before the second leg, Henry said: 'There were a lot of down and ups. After the first night I was stuck in a wind hole and was last so that was a pretty dark time when I realised I was just going to have to sit there for a while. 'But I was pretty motivated in the morning to get back in, I knew what the weather was going to be like and knew there would be opportunities. 'I managed to get back in the pack and sailed quite well the rest of that day to get right up the front, it's probably the best I've sailed a Figaro and then lost loads of places on the two channel crossings – one because I was just not fast enough and I don't really know what happened last night.'
