It was an overcast day at Cattewater for the gig regatta, but the day was brightened up by the welcome from the Cattewater club and the vast amount of delicious cakes on sale.

There were 15 clubs from across the Westcountry participating in what was another close contest between crews.

The first race was the ladies' C, which was a tight race from the beginning. Dart had a good start, maintaining a good position with the leading boats and had a good turn round the first mark.

Strong crews from Weymouth, Fowey and Caradon pulled away and Dart were not able to catch them, but came a respectable fourth out of 12.

The ladies' B race followed with four of the crew rowing their second race back to back. Dart again made a good start in what was an extremely close race, with all crews staying in a line almost to the first mark.

None of the boats had made a significant break so the first mark was a battle for position.

Dart were being squeezed between Teignmouth and Cattewater, so took the outside water and managed to tuck in behind Cattewater thanks to some skilful coxing by Paul Kunert.

From then until the next mark it was a game of cat and mouse between Dart and Cattewater, with Cattewater finally getting their nose in front at the last mark after a close encounter of oars and boats. Dart finished sixth out of 11.

By the time the men went out to race the wind had changed direction and increased in strength.

Dart men's crew did another stirling job in the men's B race and were again fighting for position against the top clubs.

They came in a good sixth out of 15 with clear water behind them. The men's A was again a battle between the top clubs and Dart men had a tussle against Cattewater in a rerun of the ladies' B race.

Cattewater went wide on the first mark and then engaged their bow with the stern of Charlestown.  This enabled Dart to pull ahead of Cattewater and alongside Charlestown (a good crew and they soon pulled away).

Dart managed to stay ahead of Cattewater to the third mark, and also squeezed ahead of Weymouth.

Unfortunately, on the final leg of the race, Cattewater and Weymouth both managed to pull ahead of Dart. The men's A finished in ninth place in a field of 14.

The final race of the day for Dart was the ladies' vets. They had a good start and got ahead of Cotehele Quay and Penryn at the first mark.

Unfortunately Dart were unable to maintain their lead and both boats pulled through on the last leg of the race to leave Dart finishing eighth out of 10.

The club offers its thanks to Eve from Brixham Gig Club, who joined Dart to make up the vets crew.

Michael Bryant-Mole joined the Weymouth men's vets crew for the last race of the day. They had a very successful race, coming home in second.

This was another good regatta for Dart in Smudger, consolidating earlier successes.

The club wishes to thank Paul Kunert and Clare Thorp for again doing the double of rowing and coxing and thereby spending most of the day on the water with no opportunity to eat that cake.
