Dartmouth Bowling Club
On Saturday, June 16, it was another home match for the men's section of Dartmouth Bowling Club in the second division of the Mid-Devon League, and the visitors this week were Dawlish Marina.
The weather deteriorated somewhat at the start of the match but gradually dried up as the afternoon progressed, and it turned out to be a bit of an up and down afternoon for Dartmouth too, as was shown in the final scores.
On rink one the team of M Nutt, M Gregory and skip P Hannaford, played well throughout, being 4-3 up after five ends then 10-6 up at 10 ends.
However, then the after tea syndrome kicked in and things turned in Marina's favour, helping them to a lead of 14-15 after 15 ends. Dartmouth fought back to score eight shots to Marina's three, to be 22 shots to 18 at 21 ends, but then, of course, as Dartmouth could only field three players in their team the rules state that you have to forfeit 25 per cent of your score, which then gave Marina a winning score of 16 1/2 to 18 and the two points. On rink 2 the team of P Walton, M Greenland, H Crossman and skip J Townsend started well, being 4-3 up after five ends.
They lost their way and were 4-18 down after 10 ends before scoring well over the second half of the game.
However, they couldnt catch Marina, who ran out winners by 20 shots to 25.
On rink three the team of T Moysey, J Bowden, M Durston and skip D Sherlock had a somewhat up and down sort of a game, being 5-4 up at five ends, down by 8-12 at 10, at 15 ends they were 21-13 up, before only scoring two points to Marina's eight to allow Marina to scramble a 23 all draw.
On rink four the team of R Swindon, S Ivey, J Tremlett and skip P Caddy had a steady game all through their match, being 7-1 up after five ends, 12-4 up after 10 ends, and 16-11 up after 15.
They then scored five shots to Marina's four to run out winners by 21 shots to 15, but this wasn't enough to give Dartmouth a winning score, losing by 80 1/2 shots to 81 and a points score of 3-11 to Marina.
