The weather wasn't too bad when the players started out for the Wednesday circus but it didn't take long for it to change.

By the time they had reached the seventh the rain was hammering down and on the ninth the greens were flooded so play had to be abandoned. Everyone had played nine holes so it was decided to put £1 in for the front; it was no surprise though who won -- Bob Wotton again with 19 points.

The Barrett cup was held at the weekend and again the competition was in doubt due to the torrential rain, but thankfully it stopped and play commenced, albeit in a 40-knot westerly wind.

Andy Birss showed how bizarre the game of golf can be on the 16th, his drive followed by an eight iron covered 507 yards, impressive hitting to be there in two.

He then duffed his chip and three putted to take four shots from 15ft for a bogey six... The players on the day thought that because of the wind a good score would be around 35 or 36, and indeed that was winning for a long time.

Then Clive Westwood came in with 38 to take the cup, a really impressive effort given the conditions so well played Clive.

Second came John Wood with 36, third Dave Nicholls 35, fourth Kevin Eighteen 35, fifth David Thompson 34.

Yet again the forecast was horrendous for Sunday's league match against Bovey Castle, but by some miracle the rain did not last and apart from the odd heavy shower the match was played in light drizzle and sunshine towards the end.

Bovey's front nine is never easy and the rough had been allowed to grow, so if your ball strayed off the fairway you were punished severely.

Dartmouth faced another tough game, especially as it was Father's Day, they were without some of their stalwarts such as Malcolm Barrett and Paul Dunkerley.

This was always going to be a tight game and Dartmouth did well to win the first two games, Andy Dix and Jack Kirby winning 2-1 and Andy Lennon and David Thompson 3-1. The last three games, however, fell to Bovey, who came out on top 3-2.

Dartmouth now have a month to lick their wounds until their next game against Boringdon at Boringdon on July 14.

Dartmouth juniors

Congratulations are in order for Joe Nicholls, who won his first junior trophy when he beat junior vice-captain Stuart Harris to claim the Barrett Trophy.

Stuart finished second and junior captain Lorna Elliott was third.

Congratulations also to Liam Wadeson on his return to junior golf at DGCC, scoring 37 points.

The Barrett Cup is played on the Dartmouth Course for juniors with handicaps between 29 and 54. A strong easterly wind blowing didn't stop the current holder, Jack Durrant, retaining the cup with 46 points.

Matt Dunning finished second with 43 and Jack's brother Tom came third with 37.

A team consisting of junior captain Lorna Elliott, vice-captain Stuart Harris and Barrett Trophy winner Joe Nicholls travelled to Wrangaton Golf Club for their second round match against Yelverton juniors and just missed out on making it through to round three of the Basil Steer Trophy.
