Devon Trophy Final
Kingsbridge and Salcombe Cougars 2,
Dartmouth gave their all to the final whistle in a pulsating, end to end encounter with fellow Petroc 1 rivals Kingsbridge and Salcombe Cougars at Marjons, Plymouth.
Encouraged by a large following of supporters, Dartmouth's passion came to the fore against the technically superior K and S as both sides looked for an opening. K and S quickly gained a short corner, but the Dartmouth defence held firm, clearing well to counter-attack and giving them the confidence to repel further attacks.
In general, it was fairly even, but Dartmouth did not really test the K and S goalie as their defence held well.
The first goal came from a debatable retaken short corner which, after a second strike, deflected in off goalie Ellie Malley's foot two minutes before the end of the half .
This was a shame for Dartmouth, as a draw going into half time would have better reflected the first half's play.
Dartmouth threw everything at K and S in the second period, seeking an equaliser, and came agonizingly close through a deflection.
However, nine minutes from time K and S killed off Dartmouth's efforts with a near post tap-in. Dartmouth did not give up and pushed hard till the end with heads held high.
There were some outstanding performances, but all the squad deserve a mention for their performance, discipline and sportsmanship in defeat – Ellie Malley, Bonnie Chivers, Chloe Edwards, Julie Pillar, Jo Rendle, Lisa Hunt, Siobhan Edwards, Hannah Pillar, Jamie Rendle, Di Bradley, Jodie Chater, Lucy Pillar, Alix Vincent, Sam Webb and Sarah Barrett.
For coaches Chris Chater and Kevin Edwards, it was their last match in charge as they are now stepping down.
'We have both had a great time over the years and taken this squad as far as we can' said Edwards.
'It is time for a new approach, both on and off the field.
'We will discuss the coaching requirements at our annual meeting later this year'.
