The weather did its best to cause havoc again for the midweek stableford writes John Garner.

However, the competition went ahead and most of the players completed the course, although some turned left at the 14th for as the weather got worse, so did their scores.

Yet again it's Andy Birss who takes the win with what must be an outstanding score in the circumstances, 36 in driving rain and strong winds is very good, well played.

Second Mark Lord 30, third Phillip Brooking 29, fourth Rob Knight 29, fifth Graham White 28.

The final of the Saturday circus was played on November 9.

This time the conditions were fine and sunny and all enjoyed the day, especially vice captain Ian Metchette, who eagled the par-five eighth, well done.

Bob Wotton was going well to start with and had 14 points after six holes.

How he did it we don't know, but he somehow then managed to shank his putter on the sixth green.

He was never the same after that and only scored five points on the next eight holes.

Chris Eddowes was driving the ball superbly well and was deadly accurate with his wedges.

34 points playing off three is good, but his old nemesis came back to haunt him, he three-putted four greens, 34 could have so easily been 38.

It was nice to see the return of Lea Humphries, when he left playing golf to concentrate on his rowing he was a single-figure golfer and no doubt he will get back to that and perhaps inspire his brother Paul, a new member, to follow in his footsteps.

There was a table full of prizes organised by the circus master David Brooking, who has done a tremendous job during the year.

In appreciation of all his work captain David Thompson presented him with a memento, thanked him for all his efforts and wished him well as he steps down.

There is a new set of circus rules for next year and they will be posted on the notice board at the club.

Kevin Eighteen had a bumper day, starting with sharing the front nine on 21 points with Ian Metchette and Colin Bell.

Clive Westwood won the back nine with 19, then Kevin won nearest the pin on the third and overall with 40 for the money section.

His excellent score also won him the main trophy and first prize of a very expensive bottle of bubbly along with a copious amount of ale.

Second was David Thompson 39, third John Garner 38, fourth Stephen Blackie 37, fifth on countback Ian Metchette 37, sixth Clive Westwood 36 on countback seventh David Brooking 36, eighth Rob Knight 35, ninth Chris Eddowes 34 10th on countback Mark Lord 34.

The order of merit for best attendance during the year was won by Bob Wotton and John Wood.

Nearest the pin on the fifth was Colin Bell, on the seventh Chris Eddowes and on the 18th it was Colin Bell again.

A great day was had by all and everyone is looking forward to the resurgence of the Saturday circus.
