Dartmouth Golf Club The Wednesday circus, which this week was run by Bob Wotton, saw 22 players go for glory writes John Garner. A keen east wind made the opening two holes very difficult, but that was no problem to Zach Newton Killen and Bob Cottam, who shared the front nine with 22 points. As was his prerogative, Bula went out in the penultimate group hoping that most of the cards would be sorted when he finished his round. Indeed they were, and Bob had a good chance of winning the back as he had 23 points. That was until Andy Birss came in with an outstanding 27 points, courtesy of a two on the last for double points which won him the competition along with Mark Beal, who also played well to score 41. There were six twos, from Zach Newton Killen, Mark Beal, Andy Birss, Graham White, Bob Cottam and Fin Wilkins. It came to my notice recently of an unusual occurrence that happened on September 6 during the last round of the Gold Grand Prix. Graham White, Steve Owen and Ed Mitchell all teed off early that morning and as they approached the seventh tee they noticed a swan in distress on the pond. It appeared to be caught up in some rope so Ed Mitchell stripped off to his underpants and bravely waded in. He managed to pull the swan to the side, where Graham held its head while Steve cut the rope away. It gave Graham a good hissing as they let him go and paddled off to preen himself, no harm done. The second round of the Badger Trophy was played at the weekend. Paul Humphreys won on the day with 71, second Mario Aresti 72, third Dave Nidholls 73, fourth Chris Eddowes 74 from fifth Jack Kirby 74. The winner with the best score over two rounds of 177 was Jack Kirby.
