Victoria reigned supreme at Coronation Park where the queen of Regatta tennis was crowned ladies' champion and Alfie Flatters won the men's open singles title writes Tony Atkins.

For 23-year-old Victoria Bullock, a third singles final was to bring a change of fortune for the Leicestershire player, who beat Mia Loye from Torquay 6-3, 6-1.

A super serve from the two-time runner-up to give her match point saw her produce a stunning forehand drive to give her the title and while the result was never in doubt, the men's final looked wide open as Flatters and Rhys Dunford went into a first-set tiebreak.

Ivybridge's Dunford had served for the match at 6-5 but Flatters dug in and played a good tiebreak to go on and win 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. 'Rhys played better than me in that first set, but I just gritted away and turned things around,' said last year's losing semi-finalist.

The six-day Open, supported by Pro-Direct and Peter and Kate Ryder (Alf Resco), served up some exciting fare for the crowds that that packed the tennis area.

A Regatta debutant and former Dawlish junior champion Ricki Foster caused a big upset by beating men's second seed Steven Wood 6-2, 6-2 in the quarter-finals before losing a thriller to Rhys Dunford 6-7 (7-7), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

Wood went on to win the men's doubles with Chris Ryland, with the big-hitting six-foot plus number two seeds proving to hot to handle for Flatters and Simon Blatchford 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), while the ladies' doubles saw Devon teenagers Mia Loye and Natalie Hepburn beat Victoria Bullock and 29-year-old Jessica Pike 7-6 (7-0), 6-2.

In the final of the mixed doubles, Rhys Dunford and Mia Loye beat Alfie Flatters and Jessica Pike 6-4, 7-3 and after winning the men's over 45 singles, Mike Johnson teamed up with son Cain to win the family doubles.

The men's over 45 doubles final saw brothers-in-arms Adam and Paul Holloway beat local favourites Anthony Lyons and final day debutant Geoff Cole 6-0, 6-2 while the ladies' title was won by East Devon's Marilyn Barlow and Emma Fidge.

Newton Ferrers' Stewart Barnes justified his top seeding to beat Chris Scorer (Dartmouth) 6-3, 6-4 in the over 60 singles final and he completed a double alongside Martin Eyre after beating Anthony Lyons and Derek Jones 6-3, 7-5 in the doubles final.

Stephen Yates and Yvonne Cottam upset the seedings in the over 55 mixed doubles in beating Les Harries and Dylys Bradshaw (Plymouth) 6-1, 6-0 in the final.

In the semi-finals Trevor Blatchford (Tiverton) and London-based Tamale Jacob gave Harries and Bradshaw a fright before going down 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 10-8. Tamale Jacob was to miss out in the final of the women's over 60 doubles alongside regatta regular Caroline Newton (Avon Vale TC), when they were beaten in straight sets by Susan Plummer and Linda West 6-4, 6-2.
