The members of Dittisham Sailing Club have been extremely busy over the eight days of racing in Dartmouth Week at the end of August. DSC welcomed more than 40 boats for the senior dinghy fleet held from August 23 to the 26. The competitors were treated to a great variety of conditions on this beautiful stretch of the river Dart, ranging from a good force three to four and bright sunshine on the Saturday, a flukey force one to three on the Sunday, a full-on Monday with huge gusts and a tricky Tuesday with lightish winds and a strong flooding tide. The senior fleet (juniors having raced separately) were divided into four groups: 11 Lasers, five Laser Radials, a 17-boat Solo fleet and a PY fleet that contained a heady mix, everything from a Laser Stratos to an RS Vario. Race officer Jonathan Weeks, assisted by Frank Seear, did a fantastic job getting the fleets away, in spite of a few moments where the wind didn't want to behave itself. Thanks also must go to the event organiser Colin Holmes and the safety boat crews and all those who prepared and served the delicious food. First in the PY fleet was Sue Thomas in a Laser 4.7, Second was Jeremy Carr in a Phantom, both DSC. Third was Charlie King in another 4.7, from Exe. First in the Laser fleet was DSC sailor Sam Mogridge, with Jeff Knapman second. Third was Jo Wellard from DSC. Henry Bower from RDYC was first in the Laser Radial fleet, with DSC sailor Martin Thomas second and George Melbourne, from Exe SC, third. The winner of the Solo fleet was Tim Johnson from Chew Valley SC. Second was Jon Clarke DSC and third Mike Bennett, also DSC. After a gap of one day the open sea Regatta in Start Bay started on Thursday, with testing force four to five conditions and a steep sea. On Friday the wind was up to force five to six and only the brave ventured out, both Devon Yawls retiring full of water. Saturday's sailing was in a perfect force three to four and Sunday ended with a force two to three which kept moving around, making a good beat difficult. In the Keelboat class first was the Sonar of Sailability, second was John Skelton from Topsham SC in a Devon Yawl, crewed on two days by Johnny Moulsdale from DSC, and third were Mike Bennett and Neil Drew, also from DSC, in a Devon Yawl. Meanwhile, back at Dittisham on Sunday the dinghies were competing for races eight and nine in the Summer Points Series. In Summer Points eight, in the PY fleet David Thompson was first in his Phantom. Second was Jennie Richardson in her Laser radial and third was Bevis Wright in a Laser. Jonathan Weeks was first in the Solo fleet, followed by Les Moores, with Bernard Moles third. In summer points nine David Thompson was first again with Paul Mogridge second in a Laser and Bevis Wright third. In the Solo fleet Jonathan Weeks scored another win with Bernard Moles second and Les Moores third. The next racing at Dittisham will be on Sunday, September 7, at 3.30pm.
