A bid to set up a new Dartmouth youth council has suffered a set back – after not one young person turned up for the meeting.

Now town councillor David Gent is looking at going to the youngsters rather than asking them to come to the council.

The youngsters had been invited to Dartmouth's Guildhall to talk about setting up the youth council aimed at giving them a real voice in the way their town is run.

But while Cllr Gent showed up, not one young person made an appearance.

'Maybe the council chamber was a bit too forbidding. It might have sounded a bit too formal,' said Cllr Gent.

Now he is hoping to visit the Dartmouth Academy next week to speak to youngsters there.

And he has also been invited to the Saturday night youth club at Townstal Community Hall.

'I was a little disappointed that no one came to the meeting we had organised. I think we may have picked the wrong night. Since then I have had a couple of young people contact me via email about the youth council,' Cllr Gent added.

A 12-strong 'youth town council' operated for a year before it folded last year.
