At this time of goodwill, I do not wish to criticise those responsible for the new town map and information board recently erected in Dartmouth’s Royal Avenue Gardens, and described as ‘an embarrassment’ – but rather suggest we have an opportunity for a spot of seasonal cheer.

I am prepared to sponsor a reader competition for the most errors identified on the board, with £20 to the winner and £20 to the charity of their choice.

Entries by email to [email protected], by the closing date, December 31, 2017.

I will ask Cllr Jonathan Hawkins, who spent £1,000 of council tax payers’ money on the project, to present the prize and have a picture taken with the winner.

As a start: the ‘police’ station has shut; the ‘bank’ will close next June; and ‘Cornation Park’ has never existed.

Additionally, the board only includes restaurants and shops which have advertised, is clearly an advertising hoarding, as visitor centre manager Karen Pellow explained, and as such should have had planning permission (Town and Country Planning Control of Advertisements Regulation 2007).

If no permission has been obtained, that would be another error. Perhaps the project’s manager, Cllr Gina Coles, could enlighten us.
