FRANK GOODERSON, of Coombe Close, Dartmouth, write:

Having already written one letter, I thought I would do it once more before I leave this world, being the age I am.

You may recall my praising our care homes, carers and volunteers. I'll say it again, they are the forgotten army.

There are those among you who will no doubt say, silly old fool, what has he got to say.

The few friends I have got will tell you that they have heard me say and I quote 'men are generally stupid and I include myself in that comment'.

I love Dartmouth but the people that we rely on, the council, in my view is a waste of space and money. I would sack them all. I didn't vote for any of them, did you?

I think all those people born here should be given the option of a 12-month term as a councillor and like a juror have to have a good excuse to pass.

You should get the benefits the present councillors get, you certainly couldn't do any worse.

Ask yourself, what bright spark decided to put a marquee outside Lloyds bank during the food festival, disrupting the buses?

Why didn't they put it outside the police station for what good it is.

As for a policeman, I wouldn't recognise one if I saw one.

There are lots of little things that many of us feel we could do better, for instance, our swimming pool. I am told the issue has been going on for 20 years or more.

It would make more sense if the council asked the public what they suggest is the best idea for the parking problem instead of telling us what they want. The list goes on.

And it's the same with our MPs wanting to spend £14bn on a high speed railway.

Why don't they spend it on harnessing our rivers like the Severn which has a tidal flow of 14 knots and a big tidal rise and fall which flows in and out twice a day. We would all benefit with the power that would generate.

I'll finish up with a suggestion that will certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons – redevelop the old building in the market square, asking, of course, the Dartmouth Chronicle and others to move and turn it into a proper medical centre.

The doctors would have easier parking and there would also be parking by appointment for patients and the bus stops outside.

All other functions could carry on as they are. No doubt the doctors will be finished with me after writing that comment but, who cares, life is too short to worry and tomorrow is another day.
