THE ‘Great British Beach Clean’ will be coming to Slapton Sands this Saturday, September 17.
The Marine Conservation Society’s Beachwatch project is now in its 20th year of helping to raise awareness of marine pollution and bringing together volunteers to keep our beaches clean.
Volunteers survey the beaches they clean, and provide MCS with the vital information needed to tackle marine pollution at source. Thousands of volunteers take part every year, making Beachwatch the most influential fight against marine litter in the UK.
This year’s event is on Saturday, September 17, from 10am to 1pm - but the MSC have said: ‘If you can spare an hour or so that would be great.’
Volunteers will meet at the FSC Beach Activity Trailer, in the middle car park on Slapton Sands.
The Start Bay Inn in Torcross are sponsoring the event again and are offering all participants a free Mr Whippy ice-cream or cuppa to say thank you for collecting litter.
A spokesperson for the MSC said: ‘We had a terrific turn out last year when around 100 people came along and helped to collect nearly 50 sacks of rubbish from our beach.
‘We know that many of you already collect litter from our beaches whenever you visit them and bin it responsibly, but unfortunately it doesn’t make headlines and an event like this does, so please if you have even half an hour to spare, come along to the information trailer in the centre car park on the beach and help us with the clean up.
‘The South Hams is already on the map for caring about our environment so let’s try to make our presence felt even more.’
Rubbish bags and disposable gloves will be provided and free parking will be available in each of the beach car parks for all volunteers.
