The Sea Cadets memorial bed, designed and maintained by Dartmouth Green Partnerships at the potager on the riverfront in Dartmouth, has a new commemorative plaque, thanks to Phil Hudson of Deep Blue Signs.

A spokesman for DGP said: “He generously replaced the sign free of charge in time for the November 11 remembrance service, after it had been vandalised – knocked off its plinth and broken into several pieces.”

The memorial bed with five stylised poppies, is sponsored by the Dartmouth & Kingswear Society. It remembers five young Sea Cadets from Dartmouth and Kingswear who were tragically killed months before the end of World War II.

Aged between 17 and 18 they were part of the crew of the cable laying ship, HMS Alert which was destroyed in February 1945.

Until the bed was created there was no memorial to these youngsters. It is planted, appropriately, with poppies and forget-me-nots, red tulips and other red flowers according to the season.
