Jane Wellens, of St Michael's Terrace, South Brent, writes:
I read the article about the dangerous crossing in South Brent with great interest, and am grateful to our parish councillor Jane Maunder for taking up this important issue.
I have lived opposite the London Inn for over thirty years, within sight and sound of the road – and am well aware of the excessive speed of many vehicles.
Only last week I crossed the road with my two-year old grand-daughter and eighty-seven year old mother, and was reminded yet again of the dangers of this stretch of road. It is not for the faint hearted, and it's a miracle that nobody has been killed, especially on those grey, drizzly days that we get a lot of here.
Devon County Council are wrong to say that few people cross the road during the day – people cross it all the time, including a lot of young families and elderly people too, who live in the Corn Park and Brakefield area. And there have been injuries but as yet, thankfully, no deaths.
I find it hard to understand why DCC think that any traffic control could increase the dangers – a pedestrian controlled crossing would be wonderful, and if well signed to warn motorists, before they discovered it as they sped around the corner, could only help to make this a much safer place, particularly for the many children who have to cross here daily.I believe that the council is failing in its duty to the people of South Brent – they haven't even put up a single sign to warn motorists that there are children crossing the road.
If this crossing point were outside a school's gates then there would not be just signs, but flashing lights and most probably a 'lollipop' person too. It is high time that this danger was properly addressed, and some improvements put in place.
