William Garman, of Rectory Lane, Dittisham, writes: Having previously read articles, and letters, in your newspaper regarding planning disputes with South Hams Council for such things as railway offices, wind farms and solar panels etc, I wondered if readers would be interested in hearing about one of the many long-term developments allowed, with the council's blessing, in Dittisham at the moment. A 46ft long, by 17ft high, by 14ft wide garage/boathouse being built in the garden of a listed property in the heart of the village. When completed, this structure will be about four times larger than the old single garage it replaces and probably take up nearly 20 per cent of the total garden. In its planning report, South Hams Council warned residents that although this proposed building will be larger than the original, it would still fit comfortably within the site after covering it in wood to disguise its size; accordingly the council advised neighbours that this development would not adversely impact on their amenities. All in all, however, it could be argued that this structure will still appear unnecessarily large, and its barn-like appearance somewhat out of place in a garden in the middle of the village. Some neighbours might be in for a surprise when it is finished. I wonder what your readers think?
