DARTMOUTH'S Britannia Royal Naval College has a new second in command. He is Commander Rob Dunn who takes over from Cdr Jason Phillips, with overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of the world-renowned naval college. He said: 'I am delighted and privileged to be appointed to one of the best jobs in the whole of the Royal Navy and am looking forward to taking forward the many projects for refurbishment and redevelopment of the estate that underline the long-term future of the college in Dartmouth.' Cdr Dunn joined the Royal Navy in 1984 and has served in an assortment of surface ships and submarines. As a lieutenant, he commanded the fast patrol boat, HMS Smiter, and the Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities Royal Navy Unit. After completing his submarine command course in 1999, Cdr Dunn was appointed to HMS Turbulent, initially as the second-in-command and then as the commanding officer. His most recent sea-going appointment was a three-year posting as the commanding officer of HMS Triumph, which saw the submarine at the fore-front of operations in the Libyan crisis and in the Gulf region. Ashore, Cdr Dunn has served at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Belgium and at the UK's Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood. He commanded the Royal Navy Submarine School at HMS Raleigh between 2007 and 2009. Prior to taking up his appointment at BRNC, Cdr Dunn spent two years as the Commander (submarines) in the Devonport flotilla. Cdr Dunn was educated at the Royal Hospital School and Lawrence Sheriff School, Rugby, and follows in the footsteps of his grandfather who was also a submariner in the Second World War. He is married to Trish, who is also a naval officer.
