MARTIN MCGOWAN-SCANLON, of Boreston, Moreleigh, writes:

I am confused by the role of Dartmouth Town Council.

I have long assumed it was there merely for the amusement of readers of your massively popular organ in the downtime between music festival, food festival and regatta. It now seems to be taking itself seriously with votes of no confidence and an inability to properly manage or even finish its major asset, the market square, and dithering over the Guildhall.

It has become the X-Factor of Devon, all about the judges, the councillors, when it should be about the artists, Dartmouth, while funded by the audience, the taxpayer. I think it is time the council took a long, hard look at itself and what it does. For too long it has been a personal fiefdom for some with petty squabbles and non joined-up thinking.

Sort it out or I will stand for the Monster Raving Loony Party at the next election and pledge £1000 to charity if I don't garner more votes than the current incumbents.

As for what to do with the Guildhall. It's simple. Just rename it to properly reflect its role. May I start the suggestion ball rolling with either Malfunction Junction or Camp Cockup.
