Snow began falling in Dartmouth at 9am today and by mid morning the town was blanketed in white. Grit and salt on the steep College Way failed to stop cars skidding and by mid-morning, the first accident occurred. A black BMW was witnessed pirouetting down the hill.

John Walker, photographer, captured the accident on video. He said: “He touched the brakes and the car began to skid. The speed at which it happened was incredible. Standing on this pavement, you must watch the traffic, as it could happen again.

Another witness who wished not to be named, saw the same accident. As he got out of his car, he said: “I’ve just seen a car spinning down college way. It is slippery out there.”
