Councillors could stop smoking in the Old Market Square.

After previous discussions about whether smoking should be allowed in the square, Dartmouth Town Council agreed to look into banning smoking completely.

At the Corporate Property Committee meeting on Tuesday, July 17, Cllr Robin Springett, chair of the committee, said the council still hadn’t reached a conclusion on this.

Cllr Brain Harriss said: “I think we ought to make the whole market smoke free.” He said if people want to smoke they should go outside, perhaps in the car park, to have a cigarette.

Cllr Springett said he had been looking into this since the last meeting. The market is “technically” a building, he explained. “I don’t think we are complying with the law.”

The mayor, Cllr Rob Lyon said he agreed with Cllr Harriss that smoking should not be allowed within the four walls of the market.

Cllr Springett said the council would need to notify the cafe owners and suggested the council look into this to find out exactly what the law says.

However, he said from what information he had read, the council is not complying with the law by allowing smoking in the market square.
