ROWERS at this year’s Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta have dug deep for a teenager suffering from a rare form of bone cancer.

They have donated over £880 in prize money to Harry Endicott who is recovering in hospital after having surgery to remove a tumour in his leg.

Fourteen-year-old Harry is the grandson of John Bowden, who was regatta chairman for six years and is president of Dartmouth Amateur Rowing Club.

Harry, who lives in Exeter, has been battling with osteosarcoma since June, during which time he has spent weeks at a time on hospital visits while undergoing chemotherapy.

Recently, a successful operation was carried out at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham to replace a bone in his shin with a titanium implant.

‘He had to have a blood transfusion after the operation and is now recovering in a high dependency unit,’ said John. ‘But early signs are that the procedure went well and he’s in good spirits.

‘My wife, Gillian, and I are very grateful to all the rowers who have donated their winning vouchers from this year’s racing.

‘It means a great deal to the family and is in the true spirit of regatta.’

Harry is now enjoying visits from his family – mum and dad, Rebecca and Tony, and younger brother, William.

‘Harry loves regatta and made a big effort to be here this year,’ added John.
