Simon DeVey, of Anderton and Rowland's, Underhill Road, Torquay, writes: Thank you for the front page article in last week's Chronicle, Dispute threat to regatta's funfair, which we feel was well balanced. However, may we, through your letters page, clarify a few points made in the article. It is quoted that Anderton and Rowland's 'lost their contract after complaints that they staged a "tatty operation" in 2010'. No complaints were brought to us by the regatta committee during the 2010 funfair, neither were there any complaints tabled at the post-regatta committee meeting in September 2010, or at the 'authorities and facilitators' wash-up meeting in October 2010, which we attended, as usual. Yet, a letter was sent to the western section of the Showmen's Guild in November 2010 from the then regatta chairman, Jim Brent, giving a list of alleged breaches of contract at the 2010 funfair. We, the DeVey family, owners of Anderton and Rowland's fun fair strenuously deny any breaches of contract or any wrongdoing. At this late stage, this was neither fun nor fair! Numerous requests to meet the regatta committee and/or the officers to discuss these alleged breaches were all turned down. We did decline Jonathan Hawkins' letter of invitation to attend last year's regatta, handed to a junior member of the fairground and not to any of our directors, because our rightful fairground pitches had already been compromised. Mr Hawkins states that 'it is our fair and we should be the ones to decide who comes and who doesn't'. Many will agree with this statement, but it should be done in a just and fair manner, as this is our livelihood, the good name of our family and a long-established business which is at stake and anyone and everyone is entitled to defend that.
