BARRY VAUGHAN, of Churchill Court, Victoria Road, Dartmouth, writes: Devon County Council's libraries spokesman Cllr Roger Croad has not stated the reason why circumstances necessitate changes to a perfectly good, time tested library, run by quality staff unequalled elsewhere? It can't possibly be shortage of money, as the whole country is awash with cash. Grants are being handed out like sweets to one and all on application, with billions being poured into new white elephants to rush across a few miles at jet-plane speeds to over-developed English cities, already doing very well thank you, without the planned £45bn HS2 plaything. If the county council is so incompetent that it is unable to attend to or wishes to be rid of what amounts to be a very straightforward publicly owned enterprise, I recommend it hands it back, complete, to the town's population, together with all of our taxes set aside to spend on its running costs. Similar to the Higher Street community bookshop triumph, – I am sure the town will do a good job. After all, St Barnabas had a huge library three times the size – all started by one man. Just think what two Dartmouth men could achieve with the help of the existing expert library staff.
