John Tremlett, former chairman of the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta committee, of Southford Road, Dartmouth, writes:

I hope no one comes up with the £14,000 required to pay for the appearance of the Vulcan bomber at the 2013 Dartmouth Regatta.

Twenty thousand pounds is enough spending on events that are over in a flash, no matter how spectacular they are.

Does the committee need reminding what the dictionary meaning of the word 'regatta' is. I can't see any reference to 'flying displays' in my dictionary.

If someone has £14,000 to give away, give it to something lasting and/or beneficial to the town – the new indoor swimming pool, Townstal Community Hall, Dartmouth in Bloom etc, there are plenty of worthy causes which would welcome just a fraction of this proposed £14,000 spend.

Come on regatta committee get real, it's a regatta not an air show.
