The property most notably belonged to Chief Navigator John Davis, who worked for Queen Elizabeth I and was responsible for the English discovery of the Falkland Islands in 1592, along with the Northwest Passage which connects Greenland and Canada.

As well as its famous occupants, the house is situated in a rich historical area on top of Fire Beacon Hill, so named for the 100 torches that used to line Devon’s coastline which would have been lit to warn of incoming enemies.

Within, it retains many of its historic features, such as the flagstones in the entrance hall, the original stone fireplace in the snug, and the stone spiral staircase.
