Imagine yourself to be an explorer in this manor that once belonged to the man who discovered the Falklands.

This gorgeous Dartmouth manor has more to it than meets the eye, with previous occupants ranging from Elizabethan explorer John Davis to the former sheriff of Devon.

Dating back to Norman times and rumoured to have once been owned by William the Conqueror, Bozomzeal Manor is newly back on the market with a price tag of £2.5m.

The property most notably belonged to Chief Navigator John Davis, who worked for Queen Elizabeth I and was responsible for the English discovery of the Falkland Islands in 1592, along with the Northwest Passage which connects Greenland and Canada.

Exploration seems to be built into the manor’s history, as other former owners of the property include the descendants of Sir Walter Raleigh, another favourite of Elizabeth I, who played a leading role in the English colonisation of the Americas.

The eponymous Sir John Bozom was an earlier resident of the manor, who served as sheriff of Devon and MP of Totnes and Dartmouth.

As well as its famous occupants, the house is situated in a rich historical area on top of Fire Beacon Hill, so named for the 100 torches that used to line Devon’s coastline which would have been lit to warn of incoming enemies.

The house itself contains six bedrooms, four bathrooms and three reception rooms, accompanied by two acres of land.

Within, it retains many of its historic features, such as the flagstones in the entrance hall, the original stone fireplace in the snug, and the stone spiral staircase.

The crowning jewel of the property is the imposing Great Hall, complete with gilded chandeliers, cushioned window seats and an adjoining wine store.

Julie Hill of The Coastal House said: “Bozomzeal Manor is a hidden jewel, nestling in a quiet Devon valley and lying close to the picturesque riverside village of Dittisham.

“With previous dwellings standing on the location since the Norman Conquest, Bozomzeal Manor has taken its place in the rich tapestry of the historical past.

“A grand country home yet still manages to feel warm, welcoming and full of character, Bozomzeal Manor is the consummate family home, or couples’ home for those who love to entertain."
