I am writing in response to Steve Peacock's article concerning the possible Dartmouth town traffic plan – Multi-storey car park and a new bus terminal are mooted for town, Chronicle, March 1.

I think the proposals are a dreadful idea. My main concern would be the interests and parking needs for disabled shoppers. If the police station square becomes a new bus terminal and an absolute ban on unrestricted parking in the town centre is enforced, where will they be able to park?

This is especially problematic for those who cannot walk 50 yards. The proposed pedestrianisation of Lower Street would only exacerbate the parking problem.

The only conclusion I can reach is that the council wishes to drive shoppers – disabled and able bodied – to the soulless Sainsbury's, causing more local, independent and importantly friendly shops to close. If I were a cynic, I would suggest that was the true goal.

The ridiculous proposal for short-term pay and display parking will just drive shoppers away. This is happening all across the country, why can't the council appreciate this?

So, if you want my opinion, leave well alone.
