A group of Totnes friends who are “horrified” at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have decided to do something to help the Ukrainian people.
Syvila Chaplain, Angela Gilbraith, Madeleine O’Sullivan and Carol Owen are hosting a coffee morning featuring home-made cake and bric-a-brac stalls at Bridgetown Community Hall on Saturday April 23.
The pals came up with the idea over a pub lunch while discussing the war in Ukraine.
Syvila said: “My friends and I, like so many of us, have been horrified by the fact that a country can be invaded by its neighbour and wanted to do something, however small, to help.
“We thought a coffee morning would be a fairly simple thing to arrange.
“We will be asking for donations rather than setting prices for the drinks and cakes, which we hope will make it both a very inclusive event and that those who can, will hopefully dig deep.”
The event is being supported by the TSUNAMI (Totnes Support Ukrainians Not Any Military Incursion) group and Bridgetown Alive! which is allowing Syvila and her friends use the newly refurbished community hall for free.
“We are very grateful to Bridgetown Alive! And to TSUNAMI who will be providing sunflower plants to sell in the hope of having this symbol of Ukraine blooming all over Totnes this summer,” said Syvila.
Donations of home-made cakes will be gratefully received, she added.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Disaster Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
The fundraiser is taking place at Bridgetown Community Hall, Hope Close on Saturday April 23 from 10am to 1pm.
