Daniel Ryan, of Culverdale, of Totnes, writes: To keep kids active, invest in sports facilities. We are fortunate to live in a part of the country where we have great access to the natural environment to keep active – particularly at this time of year. However, young people benefit from opportunities to participate in structured team sport. While provision for rugby and cricket is relatively good in the South Hams, access to all- weather pitches for hockey and football continue to decline. At present the only all weather pitch suitable for hockey in the South Hams is at Kingsbridge Community College. The condition of the pitch at King Edward VI Community College in Totnes is now deemed unsafe and frankly embarrassing, while the pitch at Ivybridge Community College is not suitable for hockey. In all honesty, the pitch at KEVICC has been in a sorry state for a number of years. It is with dismay that the local hockey club in Totnes – Dart Hockey Club, with 150 playing members aged from seven to 60-plus, has been forced to relocate to Exeter, placing the club's existence in jeopardy. If young people are to be inspired to play sport and live healthy lifestyles, we must maintain facilities that are safe to use and allow access to club environments where skills and friendships can be developed.
