RE ANSTEY, of Above Town, Dartmouth, writes: With the end of winter parking along our quay in Dartmouth it seems social cleansing has begun in earnest. It is obvious parking restriction plans support this, which have been backed fully by South Hams Council, and we can only assume Dartmouth Council, although they usually work in the 'silent mode', so no way of knowing. Some little while ago areas of Dartmouth were declared environmental areas, with plans for parking, at least in our road, more or less out of the question. We had our honoured visit from the chairman of the relevant committee and the environmental officer and a long lecture followed, pointing out how wonderful our old walls were – most in a state of disrepair – and breaching them was out of the question. Repairs were first to be discussed with the council. A very clear message. Having digested this, I now see the wall opposite Dyers Wood has been breached and rebuilt to accommodate three to four large vehicles, ignoring the guidelines of that meeting. The ironic thing is, some 15-20 years ago, the then owner of that property obtained parking by breaching the wall to accommodate one small car – parking by stealth. As a member of the Dartmouth and Kingswear Society they should have behaved better. Even more strange, both alterations have apparently escaped the notice of the members of the district council and Dartmouth Council. When Devon County Council, South Hams and Dartmouth clamp down on some, and we see in our own road how some people can buy themselves out of situations created by the councils, it is very annoying. It appears nothing prevents certain people getting what they want, not even our lovely old 'Napoleonic walls' – the environmental officer's description, not mine.
