Brian Parker, of Cross-parks, Dartmouth, writes: It is Brian Boughton's letter, Chronicle, February 6, that is disturbing. We read of anti-Christian and other religious intolerances in supposedly less advanced parts of the world. Yet we have here, in our very own town, a distressing home-grown version of anti-religious zealotry. Dr Boughton continues to offer no apology and no contrition for his oafish behaviour over Christmas, and worse he clearly implies that he would do the same again, given the chance. He must not be given the chance. If the good people of the food bank and supporters are prepared to give generously again of their time and energy on Christmas Day to support the needy of the town, they should declare him 'persona non grata'. In addition to that, his letter is riddled with misrepresentations and shallow thinking. Dr Boughton says that '93 per cent of people no longer have religious beliefs or go to church, and the other seven per cent will respect this or suffer the consequences'. He is utterly and completely wrong with these numbers. A Europoll of religiosity in the EU in 2010 reported that the UK was one of the less religious countries, but even here 37 per cent believe in God, 33 per cent believe in some spirit or life force and 25 per cent do not believe in either. This last figure includes both agnostics and atheists together, with the agnostics thought to be in the greater proportion. A different analysis of several similar polls reports that eight per cent of the UK community self-identify as atheist. So, Dr Boughton, it is you who are in the minority and it is you who should respect the beliefs of the 70 per cent or suffer the consequences. This gross distortion of the facts is either innumeracy or deliberate misquoting. There are similarities here with the discredited historian David Irving and, unless Dr Boughton engineers a sea change in his attitude, he will suffer the same fate, that of pariah. I am sure many atheists hope he does, he certainly does the cause of their belief, which is perfectly respectable, absolutely no favours at all.
